Bonus shares — A positive sign.
Bonus shares are issued in a certain proportion to the existing holders.
A 2 for 1 bonus would mean you get two additional shares — free of cost — for the one share you hold in the company.
If you hold 100 shares of a company and a 2:1 bonus offer is declared, you get 200 shares free.
That means your total holding of shares in that company will now be 300 instead of 100 at no cost to you.
There is no free lunch.
Bonus shares are issued by cashing in on the free reserves accumulated profits of the company.
A company builds up its reserves what are the bonus tracks on red retaining part of its profit over the years the part that is not paid out as dividend.
After a while, these free reserves increase, and the company wanting to issue bonus shares converts part of the reserves into capital.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF A BONUS ISSUE?
Bonus issue has following major effects.
Share capital gets increased according to the bonus issue ratio.
Liquidity in the stock increases.
Effective Earnings per share, Book Value and other per share values stand reduced.
Markets take the action usually as a favorable act.
Accumulated profits get reduced.
A bonus issue is taken as a sign of the good health of the company.
WILL THE SHARE PRICE CHANGE AFTER BONUS ISSUE?
A bonus issue adds to the total number of shares in the market.
Say a company had 10 million shares.
Now, with a bonus issue of 2:1, there will be 20 million shares issues.
So now, there will be 30 million shares.
This is referred to as a dilution in equity.
Now the earnings of the company will have to be divided by that many more shares.
Theoretically,When EPS declines, the stock price should also decrease proportionately.
But, in reality, it may not happen.
The stock is now more liquid.
Now that there are so many more shares, it is easier to buy and sell.
A bonus issue is a signal that the company is in a position to service its larger equity.
What it means is that the management would not have given these shares if it was not confident of being able to increase its profits and when are saga bonus shares due dividends on all these shares in the future.
When a bonus issue is announced, the company also announces a record date for the issue.
The record date is the date on which the bonus takes effect, and shareholders on that date are entitled to the bonus.
After the announcement of the bonus but before the record date, the shares are referred to as cum-bonus.
After the record date, when the bonus has been given effect, the shares become ex-bonus.
HOW BONUS SHARES CREATES ENORMOUS WEALTH Bonus shares, in the long run would create enormous wealth for the investor.
For example, a Rs 10,000 invested in Wipro in 1980 would have grown into several Crores as shown below:- In 1980 You buy 100 shares Rs 100 per share in your name.
In 1986 company split the share to Rs.
In 1999 company split the share to Rs.
Share price of Wipro is Rs 428.
CONCLUSION Declaring Bonus shares is a sign that companies are increasing their profitability.
If you look back, many companies have announced issues of bonus shares to their shareholders by capitalizing their free reserves.
Shareholders have benefited tremendously, even after accounting the inevitable reduction in share prices post-bonus, since the floating stock of shares increases.
So keep an eye on bonus history when you decide to buy a stock-It may be a when are saga bonus shares due indicator that the company is healthy.

Saga share sale: should you gamble on baby boomers?
Investors have eight days to decide whether to take part in Saga's flotation.
We explain how the process works and assess the company's merits, including a view from Questor Investors have just days to decide whether to take a punt on the stock market flotation of Saga, the over-50s lifestyle group.
Brokers remain silent on the level of demand, because of the rules surrounding initial public offerings IPOsbut The Telegraph understands that demand is strong and could even reach the levels of excitement that engulfed the Royal Mail privatisation last year.
Around 690,000 people became Royal Mail shareholders; around 700,000 of Saga's 2.
The company had charming beginnings.
The owner of the Rhodesia Hotel in Folkestone in 1950 had the novel idea of filling empty rooms in winter by targeting older holidaymakers, rather than the usual families.
He developed a newsletter to tell his loyal customers of these offers, then expanded at breathtaking pace.
Today, Saga is a powerful brand synonymous with serving older Britons.
Its database of 10 million individuals represents half of all over-50s.
That newsletter has become Saga Magazine, Britain's highest circulating subscription magazine at more than a million readers, and 2.
A decade ago, the company was bought by Acromas, which also owns the AA.
This company, in turn, is owned by other private equity firms — Charterhouse, CVC and Permira.
Acromas wants to when are saga bonus shares due off between 25pc and 50pc of Saga and reduce debts.
Will the shares rise?
That's the big question.
The prospectus published on Thursday indicated a price of 185p to 245p and a mid-range valuation of £2.
Saga would be worth around the same as Rightmove, the property listings group, and Hiscox, an insurer.
Investors might be hoping for a repeat of what when are saga bonus shares due to Royal Mail.
Its shares were priced for safety, at 330p, to ensure the float went without a hitch.
They rose above 450p on the day, and as high as 618p two months later.
Saga executives want a successful float, especially given that many investors will be customers, but you shouldn't expect the same generosity from its shrewd private equity owners.
Let us know at Could you get fewer shares than you wanted?
This is what happened at Royal Mail and it could happen with Saga.
If demand exceeds supply, employees and customers will be prioritised.
Allocations will be announced on May 22, two days after the deadline for applications.
The minimum amount is £1,000, or £500 for employees.
Will there be any shareholder perks?
Not in the sense of discounts on products, as some companies widely offered their shareholders in the Nineties and Merlin Entertainment offered on its theme park season tickets when it floated last yearbut there will be bonus shares for customers and staff.
Customers and employees will receive when are saga bonus shares due free share for every 20 held after one year.
Customers are defined as anyone who held a magazine subscription, bought a Saga financial product or private healthcare policy between January 5 2013 and April 30 2014 or who booked or went on a Saga or Titan holiday or cruise between January 5 2011 and April 30 2014.
What does the future hold for Saga?
Demographics offer a wonderful opportunity thanks to the bulge of baby boomers — those born between 1946 and 1965.
The number of over-50s is projected to rise from 22 million to 29 million in the next 20 years.
Saga, in particular, wants to target "health and wealth".
The latter became a far bigger opportunity after plans were announced in the Budget to raise the Isa allowance to £15,000 and give the over-55s unlimited access to pensions.
Andrew Strong, a Saga executive, said: "People start to pull their finances together around 45 or 50, such as different Isas and pensions from different companies.
How to apply for Saga shares Go to or call 0800 015 5429.
Most investment shops are running the offer, allowing you to hold the shares alongside other investments.
Questor's view on Saga Grey-market pricing now indicates that Saga's shares will be priced at the top end of the price range; see Questor's updated view here.
By John Ficenec Anyone considering buying shares in Saga should know that it won't enjoy a Royal Mail style jump on the first day; this is a longer-term when are saga bonus shares due />Saga makes most when are saga bonus shares due its profits by providing car and home insurance.
However, the company plans to accelerate its growth by selling new products such as wealth advice, legal services and care in the home to the 8.
The over-50s population is the fastestgrowing demographic in the UK.
Saga should also provide reasonable income.
The company said it planned to pay out about half of its profits in dividends.
Analyst learn more here about £140m in profits in the year ahead, so a payout of £70m, or 6.
In Saga's latest annual results 96pc of the profit came from insurance, 2pc from travel and 2pc from healthcare.
The company also said the number of customers had fallen to 2.
The reason for the fall in customers was fewer products being sold into a very difficult motor insurance market.
Saga shares priced at about 200p would trade on a forecast price to earnings ratio of 15.
If the company can deliver on its growth plans, that looks fair.

A company builds up its reserves by retaining part of its profit over the years the part that is not paid out as dividend.
After a while, these free reserves increase, and the company wanting to issue bonus shares converts part of the reserves into capital.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF A BONUS ISSUE?
Bonus issue has following major effects.
Share capital gets increased read more to the bonus issue ratio.
A bonus issue adds to the when are saga bonus shares due number of shares in the market.
What it means is that the management would not have given these shares if it was not confident of being able to increase its profits and distribute dividends on all these shares in the future.
When a bonus issue is announced, the company also announces a record date for the issue.
The record date is the date on which the bonus takes effect, and shareholders on that date are entitled to the when are saga bonus shares due />After the announcement of the bonus but before when are saga bonus shares due record date, the shares are referred to as cum-bonus.
In 1999 company split learn more here share to Rs.
Share price of Wipro is Rs 428.

So keep an eye on bonus history when you decide to buy a stock-It may be a good indicator that the company is healthy.

February 19, 2012 at 1:58 pm Very good explanation on bonus share, its impact on market price as well as implications for investors.
April just click for source, 2012 at 6:08 pm its always been seen that after the Ex Bonus date the market value of the stock always goes down.
Its market value before exdate was Rs.
Does it always happen.
Please email me if you can.
Thanks Nilesh August 23, 2012 at 12:02 pm Hi, Nice post.
Is there something fishy here?
Accumulated reserves can also be utilized to decrease finance costs, if the company feels that the costs are high.
February 21, 2013 at 2:27 pm I hold shares of a certain blue chip company which I intend to sell.
But I can wait if they would be issuing bonus shares, which they have done in the past.
Looking at the balance sheet or any other indication, would I be able to predict whether they would be issuing bonus shares this year?
February 25, 2013 at 7:58 am definitely.
However, declaring bonus shares is not a must.
